Outside of it's insane power delivery, it's just an average dongle. It's able to power most headphones and is overkill for IEMs. Cheaper alternatives on the market exist & I'd recommend those over the AP6 if you're just using IEMs.
The AP6 is a great, allrounder. I mainly use it on my Dekstop-PC on Linux (CachyOS) and it works out of the box no problem. Many say that they perceive the sound of the CX31993 too digital which I can not agree with. I feel like in this Setup with 2 SGM8262 Op-Amps especially on Balanced does output a very balanced and detailrich sound.
I persoanlly like to listen to my Music bit-perfect and that's where the AP6's or rather the CX31993 Chip's caviat is. I'll explain:
Many companies advertises their dacs with a capability of upto 384 Khz at 32 Bit's while this is technically true, in reality it's different. If I trie to output either on my PC through Plexamps bit-perfect output or on my S24 Ultra through UAPP if I try to play Future's Mixtape Pluto or Travis Scott Utopia which are 24 Bit 88.2 Khz samplerate those albums or it's tracks are going to get resampled. This happens because the CX31993 DAC chip unfortunately is not capable of playing back thsoe sample rates bit perfectly.
I also assume the CX31993 is also not capable of 176.4 Khz samplerate but this I can't varify because I do not own any tracks with this sample rate.
But all in all at the end I am really satisfied with the AP6, due to the dual SGM8262 op amp configuration my IEM's get alot of juice and even I don't need that overhead for my Truthear Hexa I am still appreciate the additional overhead I have through the balanced 4.4mm output.
I also wanna add that I expected the dac would be bigger since the pictures on the shop page somehow indicated this to me. When it actually arrive I was and am still impressed on how tiny this dac is and packing 2 connection 4.4 balanced and 3.5 unbalanced, still won't go into my head.
For me personally it's a huge upgrade from my Jcally JM-6 Pro and my Moondrop Echo-B. And one it's key differences is that the USB-C cable is detachable, which means in case the cable might break in the future I ain't stuck with buying a hole entire AP6 unit, instead I just can use a different USB-C to C cable and extend the lifespan of the DAC, which is really welcome
Color me impressed! Nearly all dongle DACs I tried (over 15 now) have underpowered my Hifiman headphones (HE-400, Edition XS). Not this one. The sound is lush, and the soundstage is quite immersive. And unlike other dongles, it does not overbearingly hot to the touch. A shout out to the engineers and designers of this product. Highly recommend!
Generally all good.
But i feel like the daybreaks nozzle goes a bit deeper?
I feel like the divine/diablos nozzle are a bit to short.
It drove my HD560s on less than 50% volume on my phone (3.5mm btw). It’s all you need for any iem, ever (in terms of power at least). It does heat up a bit though.
